Project started August 2005, 29 December 2009 Re-rendered in Hypershot 15 April 2008 Added details to the centerstand and changed engine trim details 8 April 2008 Changed a few details to look more "as built" and added a new centerstand that we are making. 4 March 2008 Changed the handlebars to match exactly the real handlebars we just built, changed the battery box and added front brake cable. 26 February Well, I finally decided on the paintjob and not a moment too soon... The craem on the real bike is already painted and yesterday night I taped the green scallops with Paul Funk. Paul is still trying convince me to use the small headlight I designed with CSC but I think the big light is just perfect for this bike.. I also added the fuellines in Hotrod transparant red! 12 February As the craemwhite paint is already on the real bike I keep experimenting with the tank untill the last moment. This time I tried the traditional double stripe that BMW's used to have a long time ago. Stock BMW's were black with white double stripes, I could do it with green on white. I kinda like it, it looks very BMW-ish..... 5 February 2008 As usual, deciding on the paintscheme is the most difficult part for me. I made a bunch of different designs with some help from Danny Franssen, but still not sure. 22 January 2008 Changed the taillight bracket again, experimented with a different paintscheme for the tank, added new brake pedal and different handlebars.... 15 January 2008 After a lot of different tries, I have finally decided on the shade of green I want, which is good because the real bike will go to paint in 2 weeks.... Also completed the taillight and added new footrests, tucked the pipes in a bit closer to the centerline of the bike. 7 January 2008 I replaced the Avon tires with Firestones made brackets for batterybox and taillight started modeling a different taillight I found at a swapmeet , made the pipes longer and lower, removed the floorboards etc....... 16 November 2007 I added rear brake linkage and different plugwires, also added cast floorboards but have not decided if I will keep these yet.. 6 November 2007 Another change in the paintjob, getting close to what I want now! Added carb linkage and fuellines 30 October 2007 I completed the small details of the Stromberg carbs and tried a different style for the pipes. I changed the colour of the rims to match the colour of the tank. 25 September 2007: Continued work on the Strombergs, there is definitely an interference problem between the carbs and the pipes; guess I'll have to change my plans for the pipes, 'cause I just loooooove those carbs! Also I added the front and rear tankmounts. 11 September 2007: The plans have changed a bit, after a lot of searching I got my hand s on a pair of brandnew Stromberg 97 carbs. Spent most of the week doing an accurate CAD model of them. Ofcourse I will have to change the design of the pipes for one thing.. Allthough the real bikebuild is already pretty far along, there should still be enough time to do this change. Also I am still not sure about the paintjob either, but first things first! 16 January 2007 I added a finned front cover on the engine, still experimenting a bit here... Also I updated the rear fender to look more like the real one and changed the lighting and camera in the renderings. 28 November 2006 I worked on the forkstops and the tankmounts and tried to make the nickelplated parts on the CAD version look more like the real thing 24 October 2006 I changed the handlebars to a wider style, added shifter and kickstarter, added rubbermounts for gastank, added brake pedal mount and also added a cover above the gearbox to hide the coil and other clutter. 17 October 2006 Another idea for the pipes, I like this style but it means I will need to change my plans for the carbs. Hmmm, howabout 2 Strombergs? 10 October 2006 The base colour is now definitely going to be cream, I am still playing with the pipes a bit, this set is inspired by the style of pipes often seen on "ratrods" 3 October 2006 Did anybody notice I am having trouble deciding on a colour? I liked the red but since everybody seems to be using that colour lately I decided on a Creamwhite, to be completed with some hand lettering and/or pinstripes. Some old entries I found from the beginning of the project: 22 August 2005: I made a precise model of the BMW hubs, 16" HD rims and added classic style firestone tires. I plan to make new wheelhubs with short spokes on the brake-sides and long spokes on the other side. The new hubs will probably be black powder- coated steel, I modeled the stock hubs so I would have alll the important internal dimensions 1 August 2005: I started by stripping my BMW completely, removing all unused brackets, sandblasting the frame and then measuring and modeling it in CAD. The worst thing about my old BMW was that it handled very badly because of the wrong trail. I bought this frame at a swapmeet 20 years ago and the previous owner had modified the neck to fit 10" overstock Honda forks... This will need to be corrected by removing the neck and replacing it with a HD style neck using the correct steering neck angle. The best thing was the frame itself, built in 1951 it has oval tapered front downtubes and oval tapered tubes under the seat. In the first set of drawings I used an old Superglide tank and a short springer fork (also with oval tapered tubing in the legs)
