The English Wheel

This is a project we have wanted to do for ages, but there always seemed to be something that needed to be done first. We had been studying the design of English wheels for more than a year, collecting all the drawings and pictures we could find and 2 weeks ago Aad called me on the phone and said "you'll never guess what I have been building" When I went over to his place he was quite far along building this thing. The only thing he needed me to do was figure out all the coordinates of the small wheels for the CNC lathe, no problem!

As a test pice Aad cut and annealed a 2mm aluminum circle, and started hitting it with a wooden hammer on a sandbag. Then he rolled out the bumps on the English wheel and repeated the process a few times. Because he did not shrink the edges of the sheet very much he was actually stretching the middle part, making the material there thinner and thinner. He almost made it into a half ball, but had to stop when the material was getting too thin. Next project: Making a rear fender for Aad's bike (Cadbike #31) from scratch!
